FP2 Assignment 1: Creation of video guide for the elderly

In my second year of polytechnic life, I had a project which was to give back to the community, and my group and I chose to create a video guide for the application "WeChat", which is an application widely used all around the world. In Singapore, a large portion of the elderly actually uses WeChat, and the creation of this guide will largely benefit both those who use the application, as well as those who had no prior knowledge on WeChat. The goal of such our project is to give back to the society, by providing a source of information for those who need them, as well as aid the seniors of the community I live in to adapt to the newer times.

Our guide covers all the basic features of WeChat, from the basic features such as messaging other users, to the scanning of another user's QR codes to add them into the friend's list. In addition, after researching and interviewing the users of this application, our group discovered that actually a large portion of WeChat's users are Chinese speaking individuals, hence we decided to create two versions of the guide, one with English voice over and subtitles, and the other in Chinese. Having these two versions ensures that our guide can reach our target audience, which is the elderly of Singapore, and help them become more tech-savvy as well as learn more about WeChat and its features.

In conclusion, throughout this service-learning project, I have learnt various skills regarding video-making, values such as empathy, as well as the need to be grateful towards others. I have realised how empathy and gratitude are vital towards building a cohesive community, and that being thankful towards others does not just affect others, but also makes yourself a happier person in general. In light of this learning, in the future, I will strive to be a more grateful person, who empathises with other’s situations and show kindness to those who need it.
